We have the pleasure of running the East Hants Young Carers Programme.  Our Young Carers are aged 8-18 years old and have been referred to us to join the programme.  We offer school and family support, club nights, residentials and so much more.

This is their time, to be themselves and to have fun.

The definition

Children and young people under the age of 18 years old who provide regular and ongoing care and emotional support to a family member who is physically or mentally ill, disabled or misuses substances.

I didn’t consider myself a Young Carer as my parents look after my brother.  However, I did feel he was getting all of their attention, this made me have mixed emotions, I felt angry and guilty at the same time. Since being referred to YC’s, I  know my feelings are normal and I can now enjoy my own space and enjoy being at home too.

So what do we do during our sessions?  The young people will have the opportunity to mix with other young people across East Hants who are in a similar situation to themselves.  We play games, celebrate birthdays, hang out, shoot some pool, play on the xbox, get creative and generally have fun.  We make time and space to talk about whatever is important to them.  We share meals together and sometimes go on outings. We also offer an exploration programme for those new to the programme.

The family events are great, I get to spend quality time with my family.

I never feel judged, I feel like I am actually listened to.

I feel like I belong somewhere, where I don’t have to explain anything, unless I want to.

It’s just something to look forward to each month, that’s just for me.

Our Youth Workers are also on hand to provide support and a listening ear to our Young Carers.  Maybe you would like to discuss something that is happening in your life at the moment?

You can speak to a Youth Worker during your session or alternatively contact us.  One of our Youth Workers will then be in touch.

This is a special message to our Young Carers from all of us at The King's Arms.
